What does the writing center do?
The writing center can help you at any stage of your writing process, even if you haven't written a single word! They work on academic, personal, and professional writing. Bring in a paper for class, a piece of fiction, or a resume for work. The writing center will work with you to make your writing more polished and meet professors' expectations.
Will the Writing Center proofread my work?
Short answer: No
Long answer: The Writing Center is able to help you with grammar concepts that you may not know or understand, but it's primary function is not as a proofreading service. The main point of a Writing Center appointment is to create better written arguments, better understandings of assignment expectations, and to improve on the ideas you present in your writing. This is more valuable than a proofreading service. Spelling can be checked through online spell checkers or dictionaries and most proofreading mistakes can be caught when you give yourself enough time to thoroughly review your writing. Going to the writing center increases the overall quality of your writing in areas such as organization, style, thesis statements, etc. leading to better grades!
Will people judge my ideas or quality of my writing?
Many people are nervous or afraid to share their writing with others. At the Writing Center, don't be afraid because the volunteers and staff will not be giving you a grade or tell you that any idea is bad. They are there to support you and help you get better, no matter what your level of writing ability may be.
